The Page Patch

October 5, 1998

Dear Friends,

Your cards, notes, and calls have helped us through the darkest days. More frequently now, the sun breaks through the ever changing clouds which carry a message of comfort. As we approach the first anniversary of the loss of our Heidi, we wanted you to know how much your care and concern has meant to our family. Your prayers have helped more than you know.

This has been a hard road and the answers are not forthcoming. We have learned that there is no answer. In March, Carol contacted a local Bereavement Support Group. The sharing time with others who have lost loved ones was helpful indeed, leading to our starting a group for those Touched By Suicide. Together we are learning that depression can be all-consuming, that we are losing some of the brightest and best to this disease, which is every bit as powerful as cancer and heart disease.

We have learned that talking about our Heidi is part of the healing. Those wonderful 26 years with her did not disappear from our lives and we appreciate the many memories you have shared with us of events you remember and things she said. We are sad that she is not here to be a part of each day and yes, we often want to talk 'to' her. God knows how we miss her!

Rick still works on Heidi's memorial web site at www.pagepatch.com If you haven't yet visited, we encourage you to spend some time there. He has more pictures to be published as time allows. Page 1, Inc. has kept him busy this year, installing computer network systems and rebuilding computers on our dining room table. Carol has been fortunate to work with really understanding buyers and sellers this year, with a most supportive real estate community. She was honored by the Women's Council of Realtors KS Chapter at the recent KAR convention with a "signature comforter" for completing the year as WCR KS chapter President. It's true, we can make it thru, 'with a little help (or a lot of help!) from our friends!'

Madison Page Monroe was born April 26, 1998, making Andy a big brother. His 2nd birthday was celebrated in August, in Wichita with both sets of camera-toting grandparents. Most of the photos of Andrew have a blur as he is constantly in motion! Maddie is a beauty, with her mother's eyes. Dawn found some time to also attend a support group which has been very helpful to her. Dawn & Greg have KU tickets so we get to babysit when they come to Lawrence, like this weekend. We enjoy having the kids here and are prepared w/ crib, diapers, burpcloths, toys, snacks, etc. Grandparenting is every bit as wonderful as I expected it would be!

Nephew Jesse, Deb & Corey's 2 yr. old, also spends lots of time here since they are only 10 minutes away in their new home. Jesse will be the next big brother, as Deb is due in January!

There is no discounting the fact that these little ones have helped us through this year! The boys are both familiar with photos of Heidi and their sweet voices have helped us get to the 'Blessing of Remembrance,' described in one of the many books we've read. I have been reassured that they will know what a 'beautiful person' Heidi was by the many who knew and loved her.

The first Heidi Marie Page Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Jennifer Rodriguez, a '98 graduate of Lansing High School, enrolled at Wichita State University. The $500 Scholarship will be supplemented by us until the interest is self-sustaining. Part of the selection criteria was based on 'leadership, team participation and kindness to others.' Heidi's former cross country coach and the high school counselor both speak highly of Jennifer. We met her at the Awards Night and are pleased with her selection to continue Heidi's love of education.

Coincidentally, this is Mental Health Awareness Week. Having read numerous books & articles, we are wiser now...yet we would not have chosen this way to learn. How we wish things were different. Please know that your concern has helped us immensely.

Much Love,

Carol & Rick
